WARNING: LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. VERY DISTURBING AUDIO ABOVE.

In 1967, a German scientist wanted to figure out why people had nightmares. To conduct this experiment, he took 40 people of all ages and hooked them up to monitoring machines. He then injected them all with a sleep inducing drug, along with a drug he created which made people speak whatever went through their brains- conscious or unconscious  While they slept, the scientist recorded their brain activity, and placed recording devices near each person’s mouth so that he could essentially record their dreams.
When the volunteers awoke, only one person reported to having a nightmare. The scientist disregarded all the other volunteer’s tapes, and focused on this one person’s tape- a young boy no more than 8.
What the scientist heard on this young boy’s tape is terrifying and essentially made the scientist leave his practice. We have the recording here today

will someone listen to this and tell me what it is im scared and to much of a wimp to listen to it

So this is what trust looks like.

Funny, my first thought was “So this is what the patriarchy looks like.”

Yup. This is how women are supposed to trust men. With their lives.

Woman : “Hey, can we just… Drop the bow?”Man : “WHY DON’T YOU TRUST ME I’M NOT A VIOLENT GUY, YOU ARE INSULTING ME THINKING I WILL HURT YOU!!!”Woman : “No it’s just… Well I’m afraid.”Man : “But why? Look at me, I’m not afraid. And we’re equal, look, we pull the bow together.”Woman : “I think we’re not equal, you can kill me with the arrow and I can’t.”Man : “What? So you would like to be able to kill me? You’re so agressive!”Woman : “That’s not what I mean, we were talking about equality : you can hurt me, I can’t.”Man : “Of course you can. You can hit me with the bow if you want.”Woman : “That’s not the same thing, it will never kill you.”Man : “Oh, you always complaining, stop victimising yourself! Do I talk about the difficulty of holding the arrow? Of the responsibility it giving to me?”[…]Etc, etc.Every debates about gender equality, ladies and gentleman.

omg the comments.  Brilliant.

HELLO YES I WOULD JUST LIKE TO INTERRUPT THIS POST HERE AND SAY THAT MARINA ABRAMOVIC (THE WOMAN IN THIS GIF) IS ONE OF THE MOST BADASS HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET. I DO BELIEVE WHAT YOU’RE DISCUSSING HERE IS A LOT OF WHAT SHE MEANT TO POINT OUT WITH THIS WORK HERE, ESPECIALLY AS SHE ALLOWED HER PARTNER ULAY TO POINT AN ARROW AT HER CHEST AS THEY BOTH PUT TENSION ON THE BOWSTRING NOT ONCE, BUT REPEATEDLY THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE PERFORMANCE.
MARINA ABRAMOVIC IS A PERFORMANCE ARTIST, AND PERFORMANCE ART IS A MEDIUM THAT WAS QUICKLY ADOPTED BY FEMINISTS IN THE 70S BECAUSE IT WAS NEW, AND THEREFORE NOT YET DOMINATED BY MEN (A PROBLEM STILL FOUND IN THE POPULAR ART WORLD TODAY). SHE PUT HER BODY ON THE LINE IN TONS OF HER ARTWORKS AND DESPITE BEING WELL OVER 60 YEARS OLD SHE CONTINUES TO DO SO TODAY. SHE HAS BLED BY HER OWN HAND AND OTHERS’ AND ONCE SHE EVEN ALLOWED A STRANGER TO PUT LOADED GUN TO HER HEAD. ALL OF HER PIECES DEAL WITH RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, AND CAN OFTEN BE STRESSFUL OR DISCOMFORTING TO WATCH, SOME MAYBE EVEN OFFENSIVE. BUT DOESN’T THAT JUST SHOW YOU THE CONCERN WE HAVE FOR OTHERS?

So when people leave, I’ve learned the secret: let them. Because, most of the time, they have to.

Let them walk away and go places. Let them have adventures in the wild without you. Let them travel the world and explore life beyond a horizon that you exist in. And know, deep down, that heroes aren’t qualified by their capacity to stay but by their decision to return.
